Wakefield in West Yorkshire will deliver capital developments, provide a business support programme for local creative businesses and support creative and skills development.
The programme known as Creative Wakefield, has five overarching aims: Place-making; Visitor Economy; Wellbeing and Inclusion; Creative Skills; and Spaces and support.
It is led by an unconstituted Board, enabled by Wakefield Council.
The programme is built around four key elements:
- Business and sector support which includes the Creative Wakefield Advance programme launched in September 2020 designed in partnership with Creative England (now known as Creative UK). The Creative Wakefield Network has been established to provide sector-specific support and facilitate more effective collaboration and joint working.
- Creative and digital skills development which includes the Creative Skills Development Programme and the Learning City strategy
- Showcasing and supporting local talent through Wakefield’s Creative Challenge
- Repurposing of the former Wakefield Market Hall and the creation of managed workspace called WX and supporting the development of a Research and Development Centre (XPLOR)
Creative Wakefield is a cultural compact. Cultural Compacts represent a step-change approach to working in partnership across sectors. These partnerships bring together local authorities, businesses, education providers, cultural and community leaders, driven by a shared ambition for culture and place, to co-design and deliver a vision for culture within a place
